This past Tuesday was a challenge. Let me explain.
A pedestrian takes a huge risk in the wintertime; not because of the traffic and crazy drivers but because of the weather. Walking downtown becomes more like a skating competition in seeing who can beat the slippery ice and make it saftely from point A to point B.
As owners of a business located right along Main Street, it is our duty to take care of our section of sidewalk. No problem. We make sure that it is kept clear of snow and ice because who wants a fine from the city and who wants someone flat on their face on the ground?
Well.
Tuesday morning was quiet and I was behind the bar polishing glasses. I do a lot of this but I don't mind because it gives me the opportunity to gaze outside and watch the comings and goings. But this morning was different because I witnessed something that I wish didn't happen.
Two ladies were rounding our corner when I saw the one lady become a blur flying through the air. She went up and she went down. Hard. I rushed to get my mom and she hurried outside. The lady couldn't move because of the pain that her hip was experiencing. She had already broken the same leg two years ago. Great.
We got an ambulance which in turn got the firetruck. It's ridiculous to think that the ambulance took 20 minutes to get here when they're only 7 blocks away. And the fire truck is just one block away. Hmm.
What chaos. She was taken away in the ambulance and we later found out that she had to be transported to Cranbrook (1 hr away) because of a broken hip.
A broken hip.
On our section of the sidewalk.
Lovely.
Needless to say we're going to be sending her flowers...
